Proportional Representation Voting for Barbados

Overview

Barbadians have been accustomed to a particular type of voting system for many years, in fact since adult suffrage in 1951. That electoral system is called the First-Past-The-Post-System or FPTP for short.

FPTP simply means that whichever party wins a majority of seats in  the election forms the government. Majority means more than half not most.

As you know there are thirty constituencies in Barbados and twice in a row: once in 2018 and again in 2022, one party won all 30 seats creating effectively a one-party government.

Given the way the current system works, there is nothing stopping the same party or another party from winning all 30 seats in the next  I am sure that on the basis of your experiences over the last ten years or so, you find that UNACCEPTABLE

Our system of democratic government calls for an opposition but as we have seen twice in a row, the system can throw up a result that leaves us without an official opposition.

We cannot hope for a crossing of the floor to acquire an opposition. The electoral system should cause that to occur automatically.
