Putin Targets Donbas Region ||

Having failed to take the capital of Kyiv after campaigning there for about a month, the Russian army is launching a major assault on the east of Ukraine in an effort to take the Donbas region.

But that is not before it pounded Mariupol to rubble. Mariupol is a city in southeastern Ukraine, on the north coast of the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kalmius river.

In targeting the Donbas region, the Russians are seeking what might be perceived as an easier target. This is primarily because the Donbas region consists of two enclaves of pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists: the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic.

Offensives against this region in the past have been used as a partial excuse for the invasion of the Ukraine.

But in their retreat from Mariupol the Russians have left behind possible evidence of war crimes.

Expert on Ukraine: Putin’s War Will Fail

Ukrainian expert Taras Kuzio believes that Putin’s war on the Ukraine is doomed to failure.  Dr. Kuzio made this disclosure in a wide ranging interview with The Telegraph journalist Steven Edington.

Dr. Kuzio is an Associate Research Fellow at the Henry Jackson Society and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science, National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy.  His Henry Jackson Society profile can be found here.

A key counter-narrative point made by Dr. Kuzio is that NATO is already at war with Russia.  He offers three pieces of evidence to support his claim.

Other key issues raised with Dr. Kuzio by Steven Edington include the relative strengths of the Russian and Ukrainian armies, a no fly zone over the country and what victory could look like for either side.

Describing Putin as a sociopath, Dr. Kuzio also argues that since 2007 Putin has made it clear that he was at was with the West, a message lost on western leaders.

This interview illustrates the danger of making geo-political analyses simply in terms of military and political variables without due attention to deep socio-psychological issues such as history and national identity.
