After voting Kevin McCarthy out of office as Speaker three weeks ago, the US House of Representatives today finally elected Louisiana GOP Representative, Mike Johnson, as Speaker of the House.
The action against McCarthy was orchestrated by Matt Gates – a Florida representative since 2017- acting as part of a clique of eight GOP members that includes representatives Marjorie Taylor Green and Nancy Mace. After cycling through more than four nominees and potential nominees as well as four rounds of voting over the last two weeks, house members finally decided on Mr. Johnson. |
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Johnson, who garnered 220 votes in the 435 seat House, acknowledged the serious problems facing the US both domestically and internationally. He cited the increased cost of living, the southern border crisis, the national debt and the current Israel-Hamas war as the four main issues facing his country.
The new Speaker singled out the staggering US 33 trillion plus national debt as the number one priority for his tenure, pledging to get to work immediately to prosecute the American people’s business. With another potential government shut-down looming in less than 30 days, this clozure to the Speaker’s race could not have come any sooner.
